Aidan Cooney - Week 5

A much better week for Aidan.  Got through the mental barrier and picked up his training to a new level.  He can now comfortably cycle for over an hour and walk/jog up to 45 minutes.  His routine for the next 2 weeks will remain around the same, slowly but surely building up the miles in his legs.  In 3 to 4 weeks we will put the two disciplines of cycling and running together for a one and a half hour challenge.  He also comes to us here in Fitness Together for 2 sessions per week for specific Personal Training.  On Ireland AM (TV3), Friday 26th Feb, we will reveal on-air his progress to date.

Aidan Cooney - Week 4

This Sunday, 14th Feb Valentine’s Day, was the end of week four.  It was a tricky enough week for Aidan.  He had quite a few on air commitments as well as keeping up his training regime.
It is always about now that people starting off on a new training plan can struggle a bit.  You put all this work in and you question” is it worth it, am I actually making progress?”  The answer is, of course, yes.  You just need to be patient and consistent.
If you  are struggling with motivation, start tuning into the post exercise high, this is the sense of well being enjoyed after exercise.  Remember it and use it to motivate you to get to the next session.
Aidan finished great.  A group of us got together and did the hill of Howth on Sunday; no stopping, all the way around.  Great work out and clocked 1 hour 20 mins.

Aidan Cooney - Week 3

Another eventful week with Aidan Cooney and our friends from TV3.  Aidan came in with the TV crew to shoot his progress to date.

In fairness to Aidan he has only being training for 2 full weeks and is already showing good progress.  He has improved in all 5 components of fitness with great strides in his cardiovascular development.  A Vo2 max score from 27 to 33.7 is excellent in a short time.  It sets him up very well to complete the Connemara Adventure Challenge on 8th May.

Next week Aidan will be in with us twice and out on the road either walking or biking 3 to 4 times.  Our goal is a 60 minute stint next Saturday 13th using both bike and walking.  If you are going to join us on the 8th, now is the time to start your training, if you haven’t already.

Update again next week, keep training!

Since we were spending so much of our time working on ideas like Gaelforce West, we decided it would be sensible to run these events ourselves rather than contract in a Management company as was the case up to '10.

This has now happened and we are working closely with our local communities to develop both these events and other ideas. Very keen to improve the experiences and also to get quality feed back. Also interested in any ideas you might have for other active events.
For instance we aim to have an overseas Gaelforce event in place for next year and maybe offer a fun training camp next winter somewhere in the SUN!
Meanwhile, keep training!

Aidan Cooney - Week 2

Hi All,

We are now well on the way to getting Aidan fit and ready for the Connemara Adventure Challenge.

He has had his medical and thankful there was nothing to over worry us and Dr. Ray Power has given us the go ahead to start Aidan’s programme.

The programme attached in above blog entry is for a beginner.  It is designed to take someone from a sedentary position to completing the Connemara Adventure Challenge, which is a  very exciting and challenging 26km, within 12 – 16 weeks.

If you are up for the challenge, remember start slow and just complete what’s suggested every week.  The key is consistent training over the 12 week period.

Will update next week.

Well the snow has melted and the sun is out, time to get training. It is always hard to push yourself out the door but it is always worth it, even though I know this at the beginning it does not make it any easier! I have a 6 month old Husky/Lab x called Herbie who is my motivation at the moment. If he doesn’t get out of the office for exercise he drives the Gaelforce office mad!
I think for me a little exercise often is going to work. I hope the weather holds for the weekend so I can get out on my bike, unfortunately Herbie can't come, his little legs aren't up to it yet.
Get out there everyone while we have the weather!
